François-Vincent Toussaint is known for this work, which caused a scandal and was banned upon its publication in 1748. The book was nevertheless very successful, and some articles were included in the Encyclopedia. This work is based on morality and natural justice, and rejects the need for revealed religion, natural morality being independent of the social laws brought about by religion. In 1752, he published Éclaircissements sur les mœurs, to defend the first work.
