Full waxed Havana calf, lightly marbled, with a richly decorated long spine, title label in red morocco, covers decorated with a triple-edged frame and moral motif on the corners, all edges gilt, 162 x 100. 1752. Fifth edition. 390p. With table of chapters and articles. Allegorical frontispiece on vice and virtue, vignette on the title. At the end: Explanation of the frontispiece and the fleuron (vignette on the title). Includes: Epistle to Madame M. A. T.****. / Warning / Preliminary discourse on virtue, paginated ii- xxxviii. Then the text. Fresh, clean and intact interior. Note that the last 20 pages, including the tables, have reduced readability due to a transfer of ink from front to back which gives the appearance of overprinting. A bibliographic note in pencil on the lower cover. Corners and fields rubbed, one corner very slightly dulled. Covers rubbed with some scuffs, but good. Spine rubbed, with scuffs at the foot and crown, with a small tear without loss at the crown. A fine, firm copy. A scholar, translator and encyclopedist, François-Vincent Toussaint is known for this work which caused a scandal and was banned upon its publication in 1748. The book nevertheless enjoyed great success, and some articles were taken up by the Encyclopedia. This work is based on morality and natural justice, and rejects the need for revealed religion, natural morality being independent of the social laws brought about by religion. In 1752, he published Éclaircissements sur les mœurs, to defend the first work. We have this edition in stock in the same binding.
