Full folio in green imitation percaline cloth with long spine decorated with the author, publisher's title, and a motif: limnimètre, 395 x 260, 47p. Followed by 71 plates. Undated. First edition. Numbered 312. Preceded by a tribute from the Cie du Chemin de fer du Congo to Mr. Le Chevalier de Ghellinck d'Elseghem, signed by the President-Administrator-General Manager. Photographic vignette with the title. Complete with its large color map in its pocket "Map of Bas Congo. Map of the country located between Inkisi, Congo and the railway" at a scale of 1/100000 (excellent condition, small tears in the main folds). Text in two columns ruled in red. With numerous tables in the text and therefore 71 plates including 8 maps (6 colors), 57 photographic reproductions, 43 sketches/plans/graphs/tables. All intact in excellent condition. Interior clean, intact, very rare marginal foxing. Binding in good condition: covers, corners and fields rubbed with scuffs. Upper joint briefly split at head and foot. Spine rubbed with scuffs at head and tail, a fine tear without loss at head of spine.
Robert Thys est le fils d’Albert Thys, proche collaborateur du roi Léopold II de Belgique lors de la création de l’État indépendant du Congo et le fondateur de la principale ligne de chemin de fer du pays. Pour ce projet, de 1887 à 1899, Thys fait neuf voyages au Congo. Le Compagnie des chemin de fer du Congo est créée en 1889 pour construire et exploiter une ligne de chemin de fer entre Matadi et Léopoldville, mise en service progressivement de 1892 à 1898, au prix d’un coût humain très élevé.
