Large 12mo full contemporary calf, spine with three ribs decorated with a wine-coloured title label with a frame, red marbled edges, 170 x 115, 923p. 1609. Rothomagi. Followed by the Index Locupletissimus, 63p. (header and initial). Superb allegorical title engraved by “Caron Mepplius fecit” with ex-libris “Seguier curé.” Vignette on the second title. Includes: Virtute doctrina, 4p. (header, initial); Bibliopola lectori, Approbationes, 6p. (header, initial); Index capitalorum, 11p. (header, initial). Then the text and its eight books. Each book with header and initial. Book 8 being “Tractatus de septem peccatis mortalibus”. Clean interior, with very marginal foxing; Brief dampstain at the beginning of the volume on a few pages at the head. Pages 490 to 558 are offset from the block and protrude slightly, 557-558 is detached at the foot; binding open in these two places. Corners, fields and covers rubbed with scuffs, but overall good. Joints rubbed with scuffs but intact, with a wormhole at the foot of each joint. Spine rubbed with scuffs but good, with two wormholes at the foot and one at the head. A lack in the title piece. Fine copy. Francisco de Toledo was one of the first great philosophers and theologians of the Society of Jesus, of which he also became, in 1593, the first cardinal.
